Diversity in Children's Literature
Updated: Sep 18, 2020
One of the best ways to help our children learn about the world and the people in it is with books. We can learn so much more about people who are like us, and people who are different from us, too. Toddlers, especially, are taking in everything that's around them all the time. What better way to deliver information and knowledge to them than through books? They learn new ideas and they also learn to apply those ideas to the world around them.
In 'How to Raise a Reader,' Scholar Dr. Rudin Sims Bishop says that books are "mirrors and windows." Some books should be mirrors in which a child can see him or herself. And, some books should be windows into the experiences of people who are different from him or herself.
We had consultants at Usborne Books & More come together to create this beautiful video that shares some of our books with diverse characters. These books would be "wonderful mirrors and windows" to add to your collection.
